A Cool New Classic....

Jonny Blu
Jonny Blu
Thanks again to Martini in the Morning, I first heard of Jonny Blu when he came into the studios for an interview about a year or so before his latest CD "Taboo" was released.  I found him charming and really loved his music.  Along with tunes from previous releases Jonny let Brad "Martini" Chambers play "Babaloo", a tune he recorded for Peer Music.  "Wow!" was all I could think "This guy can give Michael Buble a run for his money!"  Big words I know but having seen him perform twice I stand by them. He has great stage presence and when he catches your eye from the stage he makes you feel like he is singing just to you. He is also one of the most personable artists I've ever met. A real gentleman, Jonny seems to genuinely enjoy chatting and getting to know his fans, online and after performances.

Jazz Singer and Chinese Pop Star?

Jonny Blu
Did I say Chinese Pop Star? Yes I did...Keep reading and I'll explain.  Jonny has a unique story.  Born and raised in Los Angeles and coming from a very creative family, Jonny showed a gift for languages early on. This gift led to him studying Chinese at the Peking University in Beijing.  After studying and traveling in China for two years, Jonny returned to Los Angeles.  One day on a whim Jonny entered a Chinese singing competition.  As the only non-Chinese competitor it probably came as a surprise when he won.  This random decision led him back to China where he became the first ever non-Chinese pop star to have a Chinese song on the radio in China.

Lucky for us, Jonny decided to come back to Los Angeles and start fresh with the music he grew up with.  He blends pop, jazz, swing and Latin rhythms in his 3rd studio album "Taboo" a collection of Latin Pop Standards including Babaloo, Besame Mucho and Taboo.  His previous two albums include several songs he wrote.  A favorite of his to sing "Sweet Lovin' in the Afternoon" is a perfect example of his ability to create a fun new Pop/Jazz standard.  This song sounds like it's been around for a while and has the strength to stand the test of time.

When I asked him how he felt the internet has benefited him as a entertainer he told me that after coming back from China and starting from scratch that he "knew right away that the internet was going to be my main tool for getting my music and face "out there"." Jonny makes a point of staying in contact with his fans and only wishes he had more time to sign autographs and to take pictures.
